Traditional Indian wear is one of my absolute favourites when it comes to OMG-I’M-SO-FAT days.
The flowing silhouettes hide most of the beer belly that comes from over indulgences during Arsenal matches and the salwars/patialas were made for the hungover tummies that have a tendency to swell and shrink throughout the course of the day.
Pictured here is one of my favourite and most useful buys in ethnic wear I ever made; the grey, hand block-printed, men’s kurta from the Gandhi Emporium at Chandani Chowk in New Delhi.
The mandarin collar allows it to add a zesty androgynous spring to the feminine salwar and accessories while the casual appearance allows it to be worn nonchalantly over denims as well. Even if you do end up looking like a DU election hopeful soliciting for votes.
The earrings are stolen from my beauteous and bountiful elder sister who made a career in collecting assorted cutesy ethnic pieces from all over India and then virtuously believing I was above pilfering them from her drawer when she wasn’t looking.
So the must haves for a killer ethnic look?
First a casual yet not-so-casual kurta preferably in cotton with a loose fit.
A pure white salwar/patiala/half salwar. Knit leggings don’t count because frankly they just don’t.
Bejeweled and chamkeela slippers
Someone to churao cool jewellery from!
